The Murray Drive project began as a modest addition, but through the design process it evolved into a fully integrated expansion exceeding 5,000 sq. ft.—making it both a challenging and exciting build for our team at Kolbe Valley Homes.
To seamlessly connect the new construction with the existing home, careful structural coordination was required. This included underpinning portions of the existing foundation and footings to properly support the expanded structure and ensure long-term performance and stability.
One of the key architectural goals was to create a column-free main living area with an open-to-above connection between the main and second floors. To achieve this without compromising structural integrity, we engineered a specialized lateral system using engineered wood shear walls with Simpson Strong-Tie solutions, allowing for large open spans while maintaining a robust and code-compliant structure.
The result is a cohesive, structurally sound home that blends the original building with the new addition seamlessly—delivering openness, light, and functionality while meeting the highest construction standards. We’re extremely proud of the final outcome.
